At St Luke’s Early Learning, we are always looking for thoughtful ways to create inviting, engaging spaces that spark curiosity and inspire children to explore. One of the simplest yet most powerful tools we use to enrich our learning environments is light. The introduction of light boxes and light tables across our learning spaces has added a new dimension to learning.
Light has a unique way of transforming everyday materials into something extraordinary. When children are drawn to a softly glowing table, the space itself becomes an open-ended prompt encouraging investigation. The way light interacts with different objects creates shifting colours, reflections and shadows, offering children a constantly changing experience.
On our light boards, we often place beautiful coloured and shiny blocks that immediately capture attention. As the light shines through and reflects off these materials, children are mesmerised by the effects created. This provides a rich, interactive experience that encourages children to spend sustained time exploring and experimenting.

Light tables also offer a wonderful sensory play experience. The illumination, smooth surfaces and contrasting textures invite children to touch, move and observe. Sensory play encourages exploration and discovery while supporting concentration, fine motor skills and emotional regulation. For some children, the gentle glow of the light table can be calming, offering a quiet space for focused engagement.
We are intentional about offering a variety of blocks and loose parts on our light tables. Sparkly elements, translucent pieces and a wide range of colours help ensure the experience feels inclusive and appealing to different interests and play styles. By thoughtfully selecting materials, we aim to broaden children’s engagement and invite those who might not usually be drawn to block play to join in.
Block play on the light table supports important early learning concepts such as engineering, problem-solving and spatial awareness. As children construct, balance and design their creations, they are developing foundational skills in planning, perseverance and creative thinking. The added element of light enhances these experiences, encouraging children to view their constructions in new ways and extend their ideas further.
At St Luke’s Early Learning, our light boxes and tables are a reflection of our commitment to creating environments that inspire wonder.
